The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a nonpolitical, nonsectarian hereditary patriotic organization founded in 1889 to preserve and promote the history of the American Revolution. The Society is dedicated to maintaining institutions of American freedom, fostering patriotism, and honoring the men and women who achieved American independence.

  • Qualifying service includes military, naval, civil, or patriotic service rendered between 1774 and 1783.
  • Applicants must provide acceptable genealogical documentation proving direct descent from the qualifying ancestor.
  • Applicants must be of good moral character and support the objectives of the Society.
  • Final approval of membership is granted through the appropriate state society and in accordance with SAR bylaws.

How Membership Is Structured
